This fundamental work from the operatic literature of the 20th century is a “tragedy-satire” of a corrupted society stemming from the inordinate power of sexuality. Initially in nearly 180 performances the opera had tremendous success but during the Stalinist terror the composer was condemned for this work and had to wait until the 1960s for further performances.
